Substrakt is seeking a Backend Engineer to support arts and cultural organizations by creating exceptional digital experiences.
This position is remote, but candidates must be based in the Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone in Canada, specifically in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Newfoundland.
The Backend Engineer will build robust, high-quality backend solutions for clients’ websites and digital products.
Responsibilities include creating backend solutions for new builds, updates, API integrations, and server-side tasks using technologies such as PHP, WordPress, MySQL, SQL, Python, Wagtail, Heroku, and AWS.
The role involves writing clean, efficient, and secure code, testing thoroughly, debugging issues, and optimizing performance.
Collaboration with frontend engineers, designers, and client-facing roles is essential for smooth delivery.
The engineer will take ownership of the technical quality of solutions, contribute to best practices, and maintain technical documentation.
Requirements:
Candidates must have strong experience in backend development using modern frameworks and tools, including PHP, Python, WordPress, Wagtail, and Django.
Familiarity with relational databases such as MySQL and cloud infrastructure like Heroku and AWS is required.
