  • This is a hands-on, architect-level position focused exclusively on optimizing and scaling backend software systems.
  • The position is 100% remote, with a hybrid schedule option for candidates in the El Dorado Hills, CA or Chicago, IL metro area.
  • The role involves developing and executing automated tests, enhancing test suites, and ensuring the quality of web applications.

  • The Backend Software Architect will lead efforts to re-architect, refine, and evolve core backend services.
  • The role requires collaboration with cross-functional engineers and stakeholders to ensure high-availability, cloud-native systems meet scale, performance, and security demands.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must have 8+ years of backend software engineering experience, including 3+ years in an architect or technical lead capacity.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Java and familiarity with modern Java frameworks such as Spring Boot is required.
  • A strong architectural background in building and scaling distributed systems running in AWS or other public cloud environments is essential.
  • Deep knowledge of SQL and NoSQL data stores (e.g., MySQL, DynamoDB), including schema design, indexing, and performance tuning is necessary.
  • Proven success in optimizing backend performance (latency, memory, CPU utilization) at high scale is required.
  • A solid understanding of cloud-native design, RESTful APIs, multithreading, and service orchestration is needed.
  • Hands-on experience with observability tools (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry) and APM profiling is essential.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey architectural concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences are required.
