Smartsheet is seeking a Senior Design Systems Engineer who will work remotely or from the Bellevue, WA office.
The role involves building and maintaining scalable, reusable UI components and patterns in alignment with design system guidelines and accessibility standards.
The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate design specifications into robust, maintainable front-end code.
Responsibilities include supporting engineering teams by publishing and maintaining multiple code packages, documenting best practices, and enabling the adoption of system components.
The engineer will contribute to design system architecture decisions and code reviews, focusing on performance, accessibility, and API design.
The role requires partnering with designers to explore new interaction patterns and codifying them into reusable building blocks.
The engineer will develop internal tooling to streamline workflows for engineers and designers and create functional prototypes or proof-of-concepts as needed.
Advocacy for system adoption, consistent UI, and quality code through reviews, presentations, and collaboration is also a key responsibility.
Requirements:
Candidates must have 5+ years of experience as a front-end engineer, UI engineer, or design systems contributor.
Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript (ES6+), TypeScript, Node.js, React, and CSS is required.
Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining design systems or shared component libraries in production is essential.
A passion for creating systems that accelerate the work of engineers and designers is necessary.
Candidates should have a strong understanding of accessibility (WCAG), responsive design, and cross-browser compatibility.
Familiarity with automated testing for UI components (e.g., Jest, Testing Library, Storybook) is expected.
Excellent communication and documentation skills, especially when collaborating across disciplines, are required.
Bonus points for experience developing Figma plugins.
