  • Smartsheet is seeking a Senior Design Systems Engineer who will work remotely or from the Bellevue, WA office.
  • The role involves building and maintaining scalable, reusable UI components and patterns in alignment with design system guidelines and accessibility standards.
  • The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate design specifications into robust, maintainable front-end code.
  • Responsibilities include supporting engineering teams by publishing and maintaining multiple code packages, documenting best practices, and enabling the adoption of system components.
  • The engineer will contribute to design system architecture decisions and code reviews, focusing on performance, accessibility, and API design.
  • The role requires partnering with designers to explore new interaction patterns and codifying them into reusable building blocks.
  • The engineer will develop internal tooling to streamline workflows for engineers and designers and create functional prototypes or proof-of-concepts as needed.
  • Advocacy for system adoption, consistent UI, and quality code through reviews, presentations, and collaboration is also a key responsibility.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must have 5+ years of experience as a front-end engineer, UI engineer, or design systems contributor.
  • Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript (ES6+), TypeScript, Node.js, React, and CSS is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining design systems or shared component libraries in production is essential.
  • A passion for creating systems that accelerate the work of engineers and designers is necessary.
  • Candidates should have a strong understanding of accessibility (WCAG), responsive design, and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Familiarity with automated testing for UI components (e.g., Jest, Testing Library, Storybook) is expected.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills, especially when collaborating across disciplines, are required.
  • Bonus points for experience developing Figma plugins.
