Planet is a company that designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering a vast dataset via a cloud-based platform.
The Senior Ground Station Engineer will be part of an Operations and Development team focused on maintaining over 99% uptime of a geographically diverse Ground Station network.
The Ground Station network includes a mix of cloud infrastructure, physical servers, networking equipment, and industrial controllers that autonomously track and communicate with Planet’s 150+ satellite constellation.
The role involves collaborating with Spacecraft Operators and Mission Control engineers to control spacecraft and manage data transfer.
The position requires the ability to climb and lift/push/pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
This is a full-time, remote position based in the United States, with an expectation to work from an office three days a week if located near one.
Requirements:
A minimum of a 4-year degree or equivalent technical certification in Computer Science, Information Technology, or other Natural Sciences, or a minimum of 6 years of experience in a similar role is required.
At least 4 years of experience working in an IT environment managing a large or complex environment is necessary.
Candidates must have 2+ years of programming experience with languages such as Bash, Python, Perl, Rust, Go, C/C++, or equivalents.
A minimum of 4 years of Linux or UNIX administration experience in a production environment is required.
Candidates should have 4+ years of experience working with BGP, IPSec, TCP, UDP, and IP protocols in a production environment.
Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time is required.
The ability to foster a collaborative environment and mentor team members is essential.
Candidates must be able to work with little or no supervision.
The ability to lift 50 pounds (22 kgs) without assistance is required.
Candidates must hold a valid Passport and be able to travel internationally to Planet's Ground Station locations.
A valid Driver's License is also required.
