Marqeta is seeking a Senior Principal Software Engineer to deliver software solutions on the Banking and Money Movement Team.
The role involves owning and delivering projects aligned with quarterly goals and identifying solutions to ambiguous problems.
This strategic position requires deep technical expertise and leadership across the engineering organization.
The team focuses on developing and optimizing financial services, including account creation, transaction processing, payment systems, banking integrations, reporting, and reconciliation.
The work environment is flexible, allowing remote work within Ontario or British Columbia.
Requirements:
Candidates must have 15+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, particularly in designing and delivering complex distributed systems at scale.
A minimum of 7 years of experience in payments or the FinTech space is required.
Strong experience with multiple technology stacks (e.g., Java, Python, Go) and proficiency in designing scalable APIs, microservices, and cloud-native applications is essential.
Demonstrated ability to drive architectural decisions balancing short-term trade-offs with long-term goals is necessary.
Proven leadership in complex initiatives spanning infrastructure, product development, and platform evolution is required.
Excellent communication and influencing skills are needed to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience in shaping technical strategy and mentoring senior staff and principal engineers across multiple domains and teams is important.
Candidates should be adept at solving ambiguous problems and leading teams through change and complexity.
A passion for system reliability, observability, and building secure, maintainable systems is essential.
A strong understanding of regulatory and security requirements in the financial domain is a plus.

Compensation is competitive and aligned with geographic location, with a base salary range of $240,300 - $300,400 for the National tier, $260,100 - $325,100 for the Premium tier, and $282,700 - $353,400 for the Premium Plus tier.
