Remote Sr. Database DevOps Engineer (SQL Server Migration Specialist) - Contract

Description:

• The role involves leading a complex RDS to EC2 migration initiative that includes 44 SQL Server instances and 145 databases.
• This position combines database administration expertise with modern DevOps practices and cloud automation.
• Key responsibilities include conducting a comprehensive discovery and assessment of existing RDS SQL Server instances.
• The candidate will design migration strategies using native backup/restore, Always On AG seeding, and log shipping.
• Planning and executing test migrations for critical databases with minimal downtime requirements is essential.
• The role requires coordinating complex cutover procedures with application teams and stakeholders.
• The candidate will develop Chef cookbooks for automated EC2 SQL Server provisioning and configuration.
• Configuring Always On Availability Groups and SQL Server clustering for high availability is a key task.
• The role includes implementing domain-joined, Kerberos-enabled SQL Server builds with NTLM disabled.
• Designing and implementing EBS volume configurations aligned with performance requirements is necessary.
• The candidate will integrate New Relic monitoring and alerting for EC2-based SQL Server environments.
• Configuring Commvault backup and disaster recovery for migrated SQL workloads is required.
• Comprehensive monitoring for SQL Agent jobs, linked servers, and server-level objects must be implemented.
• Establishing backup/restore policies and validating DR processes for AG and standalone deployments is essential.
• The role involves integrating infrastructure provisioning into migration workflows.
• Developing automated deployment pipelines for SQL Server infrastructure is required.
• Creating comprehensive validation and testing frameworks for database migrations is necessary.
• Implementing infrastructure drift detection and remediation processes is part of the responsibilities.

Requirements:

• The candidate must have 5+ years of SQL Server administration and migration experience.
• Strong experience with SQL Server Always On Availability Groups and clustering is required.
• Proficiency with configuration management tools, preferably Chef, with Ansible/Puppet being acceptable, is necessary.
• Experience with AWS EC2, EBS, and RDS services is required.
• Strong scripting skills in PowerShell, Python, and Bash are essential.
• The candidate must have experience with database migration methodologies and tools.
• Knowledge of enterprise backup and recovery solutions, preferably Commvault, is required.
• Understanding of Active Directory integration and Kerberos authentication is necessary.
