Astra is building modern infrastructure for moving money, providing APIs and automation tools for real-time transfers, bank debits, and card disbursements.
The company is looking for a backend engineer with strong system design experience and a high level of ownership.
The role involves shaping the core of Astra’s platform, including the global ledger, orchestration layer, and customer-facing APIs.
The engineer will work closely with product, compliance, and operations teams to deliver reliable systems that manage millions of dollars daily.
This position is ideal for someone who thrives in early-stage environments and wants to build foundational systems from the ground up.
Responsibilities include designing and owning key backend systems, evolving service architecture, writing clean Python code, collaborating with cross-functional teams, contributing to observability and deployment workflows, and participating in code reviews and mentoring.
Requirements:
Candidates must have 7+ years of experience building backend systems in production.
Strong system design and architecture skills are required, with experience in designing scalable and evolving services.
Expertise in Python and API design is necessary, along with experience in Flask or similar frameworks.
Familiarity with distributed systems, asynchronous processing, and idempotency is essential.
The ideal candidate should be a product-minded engineer who enjoys building platforms with real-world constraints such as money, compliance, and reconciliation.
Candidates must be comfortable taking projects from idea to implementation with minimal oversight.
Bonus qualifications include experience with GCP, Terraform, payments/fintech, or event-driven architectures.
Benefits:
Joining Astra means being part of a small, fast-moving team tackling challenging problems in financial infrastructure.
As an early engineer, you will have real ownership over architecture and systems that directly impact customer experiences.
Your work will go into production and shape the platform for years to come.
Astra is a remote-first company, hiring only within the U.S., and values thoughtful collaboration, clarity, and initiative.
The company is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
