Grafana Cloud is a composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana.
The Databases team operates telemetry databases such as Mimir for metrics, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, and Pyroscope for profiles.
These databases are offered as a hosted service in Grafana Cloud and as on-premise solutions.
The Databases Upstream squad contributes to the open-source Prometheus and OpenTelemetry projects to enhance Grafana Cloud Metrics.
A Databases Upstream engineer engages in open-source projects, performance improvements, and reliability enhancements.
Responsibilities include maintaining open-source projects, influencing the roadmap, delivering new features, and driving projects from idea to operations.
Engineers will design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, ensuring reliability, performance, and availability.
Participation in on-call rotations and collaboration with team members is expected.
Engineers will also have opportunities to learn about the cloud product and customer needs.
Requirements:
Candidates must be motivated self-starters with a bias towards action and a passion for observability.
Pragmatism is essential; candidates should be able to break down complex challenges and deliver modular solutions.
Strong collaboration and communication skills are required for working in a fully remote setup.
Solid experience with at least one programming language is necessary; familiarity with Go, Python, C, C++, or Rust is beneficial.
Some experience in delivering open-source projects from requirements gathering to product shipping is required.
Candidates should have experience with software development in the Cloud or systems engineering.
Experience with on-call duties and following the DevOps model is necessary.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to write clean, robust, and maintainable software.
Familiarity with observability systems and the use of metrics, logs, and traces for debugging is required.

The base compensation range for this role in Germany is €106,514 - €127,817, with actual compensation varying based on level, experience, and skillset.
