Kanopi Studios is seeking a WordPress Technical Lead (aka Senior Engineer II) to join their fully distributed team in the US and Canada.
This role involves driving technical execution across client projects, mentoring developers, shaping architectural decisions, and ensuring delivery excellence.
The position requires hands-on development combined with team leadership and strategic planning.
Responsibilities include working directly with clients, project managers, and internal stakeholders to understand technical requirements and guide the project team toward successful outcomes.
The Technical Lead will be responsible for estimating, architecting, coding, and mentoring while upholding Kanopi’s high standards of quality, collaboration, and inclusion.
Key tasks include leading the technical approach on WordPress projects, collaborating with UX and design teams, building and configuring WordPress sites, developing native Gutenberg blocks, creating HTML templates, providing architectural guidance, writing and reviewing code, leading code peer reviews, and managing the technical team's workload.
Requirements:
Candidates must have 8+ years of WordPress experience in a professional setting.
Applicants should be comfortable working in support roles and open to doing so.
Deep expertise with WordPress architecture and custom development (themes, plugins, full-site editing, Gutenberg blocks) is required.
Proficiency in Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), CPTs, taxonomies, and integrating with the REST API is necessary.
A strong understanding of full-site editing (FSE), templates, and block patterns is essential.
Candidates should be skilled in JavaScript and React (Next.js a plus), along with solid PHP and SQL experience.
Familiarity with development tools and workflows like CLI, GitHub, Docker, and multi-environment deployment is expected.
A deep understanding of modern web standards and technologies is required.
Strong writing and documentation skills, with experience creating technical specs and process documentation, are necessary.
Experience mentoring or leading developers and managing distributed teams is essential.
Proven ability to manage competing priorities and keep development aligned with timelines and scope is required.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative, inclusive approach to problem-solving, are necessary.
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience is required.
