Description:
PostHog is seeking a Backend Engineer for their Feature Flags team, with a focus on building systems that respond in single-digit milliseconds at scale.
The position is fully remote, available to candidates in time zones between GMT-8 and GMT+2.
The engineer will own the entire service from end-to-end, including design, build, deployment, and scaling of the feature flags evaluation engine.
Responsibilities include building and maintaining the feature flags evaluation engine, making high-level architecture decisions, optimizing performance bottlenecks, and working directly with customers to implement complex targeting rules.
The team is passionate about building world-class developer tools and embraces remote work.
The evaluation engine is written in Rust for performance, while the application layer uses Python/Django.
Requirements:
Candidates must have experience with any systems programming language and/or backend web frameworks, with Python and Rust being preferred but not required.
Experience in building systems that handle high volumes of requests/data (millions+ per minute) is essential.
The ability to quickly choose a sensible architecture and ship it faster than others is required.
A strong understanding of performance optimization techniques, caching strategies, and distributed systems principles is necessary.
Nice to have: experience with feature flag systems or similar real-time decision engines, experience dealing with incidents, comfort with provisioning and deploying infrastructure, experience with benchmarking and profiling tools, and knowledge of observability systems and practices.
