Magpie Literacy is an early stage, funded edtech nonprofit focused on eradicating illiteracy in America.
The team consists of former educators, literacy curriculum experts, and product developers dedicated to teaching every child to read through research-based instruction, personalization, and technology.
The organization is building a comprehensive, tech-enabled reading product for pre-kindergarten through 8th grade that enhances foundational literacy and reading fluency.
The Cloud Security Engineer (Contract) will support the platform and security needs, maintaining secure and auditable infrastructure across AWS environments.
This role is essential for those passionate about infrastructure security, compliance, and automation, particularly with AWS and Terraform.
The position is a 3-month contract and is remote only.

Respond to vulnerabilities across the platform and support CI security efforts.
Collaborate with engineers to ensure remediation efforts are properly tracked and executed.
Drive improvements in detection and alerting capabilities.
Help implement Compliance as Code strategies to automate and prove security best practices.
Support ongoing audit efforts by tracking and documenting routes, access, and activities across the platform.
Coordinate with engineers to perform scans and remediations.
Implement comprehensive logging and audit trails, including access logs, system logs, and application logs.

Requirements:

Strong experience with AWS cloud infrastructure and Terraform is required.
Understanding of modern cloud security practices and threat modeling is necessary.
Familiarity with CI/CD security is important.
Ability to translate compliance requirements into actionable engineering work is essential.
Organizational skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both internal and external teams are required.
Nice to have: Experience with Compliance as Code tools (e.g., Open Policy Agent, InSpec, or similar).
Nice to have: Prior experience working in startups or fast-paced environments.

The hourly rate for this position is $100-$125/hr.
The team operates on a remote-first basis.
