Description:
The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by designing, building, and maintaining data infrastructure for a public health organization.
This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded program aimed at helping public health agencies improve their information systems.
The position involves working within the Illinois Department of Public Health to build, optimize, and manage cloud-based data pipelines and ETL processes on the Snowflake platform.
Responsibilities include developing a detailed plan for database migration, designing and managing ETL/ELT processes, and ensuring the reliability and scalability of data infrastructure.
The Data Engineer will collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and local health departments to integrate diverse data sources into Snowflake.
The role requires monitoring data pipelines for performance issues and implementing solutions, as well as collaborating with the IT Security Team to conduct security testing.
The Data Engineer will also provide technical guidance, create documentation for ETL processes, and develop training materials for staff.
The position is remote, but candidates must be based in the United States and available during core business hours.
Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field is required.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is necessary.
Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data engineering, such as Python, Java, Scala, or SQL, is required.
Experience with big data technologies and frameworks like Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and Flink is essential.
A high level of proficiency in Snowflake, including advanced features like Time Travel and Zero-Copy Cloning, is required.
Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and familiarity with data lake and lakehouse architectures is necessary.
Expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and data integration techniques is required.
Familiarity with agile development methodologies and software design patterns is preferred.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities is necessary.
Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills are required, along with experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office is necessary.
Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $103,500-$143,500 per year, plus benefits.
Individual salary offers will be based on experience and qualifications unique to each candidate.
This is a grant-funded, limited-term opportunity with a position end date of June 30, 2025.
The position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S. based candidates.
