Description:
The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by designing, building, and maintaining data infrastructure for a public health organization.
This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded program aimed at helping public health agencies improve their information systems.
The Data Engineer will be responsible for reviewing surveillance systems and making recommendations for data integration, automation, and reporting.
The position involves collaborating with internal and external partners to define and implement secure methods for data transmission and import from diverse data sources.
Responsibilities include creating and managing systems and pipelines for efficient data flow, assessing existing data pipelines, collecting and validating data, optimizing data infrastructure, monitoring performance, implementing security measures, and collaborating with data scientists and analysts.
The Data Engineer will also design and manage data storage systems, provide technical guidance, and communicate effectively with partners at all levels of the organization.
This position is remote, must be based in the United States, and is grant funded with a limited-term opportunity ending on June 30, 2025.
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field is required.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is necessary.
Proficiency in common scripting languages such as Python, R, SAS, and SAS Viya readiness is required.
Knowledge of medical coding concepts like LOINCs, SNOMED, and ICD-10 is essential.
Familiarity with RedCap data collection and extraction is preferred.
Experience with big data technologies and frameworks is required.
A strong understanding of transactional (OLTP) and analytical (OLAP) database concepts, including relational database management systems (MS SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL), is necessary.
Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and tools is required.
Experience with cloud computing platforms is essential.
Expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and data integration techniques is required.
Familiarity with agile development methodologies and software design patterns is preferred.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are necessary.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities is essential.
Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills are necessary, along with experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $103,500-$143,500 per year, plus benefits.
Individual salary offers will be based on experience and qualifications unique to each candidate.
