Description:
The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by designing, building, and maintaining data infrastructure for a public health organization.
This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded program aimed at helping public health agencies improve their information systems.
The Data Engineer will work within the City of El Paso Department of Public Health Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) program.
Responsibilities include rebuilding projects within REDCap to incorporate standardization and validation, and importing existing data into the newly created project to build a research tool for sharing notifiable condition data with area hospitals and clinics.
The role also involves developing and training staff from the epidemiology section on the proper use and building of REDCap surveys for data collection and analysis.
The Data Engineer will assist the PHIG team in gathering requirements, planning, and developing a department-wide system to track department goals and performance.
This position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S. based candidates.
Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, data science, social science, health, or a related field is required.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is necessary.
Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data engineering, such as Python, Java, Scala, or SQL, is required.
Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of experience with translational research database systems, such as REDCap or similar systems.
Knowledge of relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) is essential.
Experience with engineering best practices such as source control, automated testing, continuous integration and deployment, and peer review is required.
Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and tools is necessary.
Familiarity with cloud computing platforms is required.
Expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and data integration techniques is essential.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners effectively, are necessary.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities is required.
Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills are essential for developing productive working relationships with colleagues and partners.
Experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams is necessary.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
Experience in developing and administering training is necessary.
Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $103,500-$143,500 per year, plus benefits.
Individual salary offers will be based on experience and qualifications unique to each candidate.
This position is grant funded and is a limited-term opportunity, with an end date of June 30, 2025.
