Description:
The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by designing, building, and maintaining data infrastructure for a public health organization.
This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded program aimed at helping public health agencies improve their information systems.
The Data Engineer will work within the Multnomah County Health Department Public Health Division Community Epidemiology Services team.
Responsibilities include creating and managing systems and pipelines for efficient data flow, collecting and transforming data, optimizing data infrastructure, monitoring performance, implementing security measures, and collaborating with various teams to meet data needs.
The position is remote, but candidates must be based in the United States.
The salary range is $103,500-$143,500 per year, with individual offers based on experience and qualifications.
The work schedule is from 8:30 am to 5 pm Pacific time, with occasional meetings outside these hours.
This is a grant-funded, limited-term opportunity ending on June 30, 2025, with potential for extension.
Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field is required.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is necessary.
Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data engineering, such as Python, Java, Scala, or SQL, is essential.
Experience with big data technologies and frameworks like Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and Flink is required.
A strong understanding of database systems, including relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra), is needed.
Candidates should have experience with engineering best practices such as source control, automated testing, continuous integration and deployment, and peer review.
Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and tools is necessary.
Experience with cloud computing platforms is required.
Expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and data integration techniques is essential.
Familiarity with agile development methodologies and software design patterns is required.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are necessary.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities is essential.
Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills are necessary, along with the ability to develop productive working relationships.
