Description:
The Data Scientist will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by leveraging data to inform strategic decisions and initiatives in a public health organization.
This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded CDC Foundation program aimed at helping public health agencies improve their information systems.
The Data Scientist will work within Maine CDC’s Informatics team, part of the Division of Disease Surveillance.
Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and improving data analysis and visualization tools for organizational staff to provide timely, relevant information that informs public health decisions.
The role involves analyzing diverse datasets related to public health issues to identify trends, patterns, and correlations.
The Data Scientist will apply statistical methods to extract actionable insights and develop predictive models to anticipate disease patterns and guide intervention strategies.
Continuous optimization of algorithms for enhanced accuracy and performance is expected.
The position requires creating compelling visualizations and reports to communicate findings to partners and decision-makers.
The Data Scientist will present data-driven insights clearly to facilitate informed decision-making and collaborate with public health organizations to understand their data needs.
The role includes providing data-driven support to inform public health policies and initiatives and staying abreast of emerging trends in data science and analytics.
The Data Scientist will explore innovative approaches to address complex public health challenges and implement robust data security measures to protect sensitive information.
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Epidemiology, or a related field is required; a Master’s or PhD in a related field is preferred.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is required.
Proficiency in statistical software such as SAS, R, and SQL is necessary.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R is required.
Experience with data visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or ArcGIS is essential.
Experience with data manipulation and analysis tools such as SQL, Pandas, and NumPy is required.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are necessary.
The ability to interpret complex datasets and derive meaningful insights is required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
The ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners effectively is necessary.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities is required.
Professional certifications in data science or public health analytics are preferred.
Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills are necessary, along with the ability to develop productive relationships with colleagues and partners.
Demonstrated ability to work well independently and within teams is required.
Experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams is necessary.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
Benefits:
The position offers a salary range of $92,700-$134,275 per year, plus benefits.
Individual salary offers will be based on experience and qualifications unique to each candidate.
The work schedule is from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST, Monday to Friday.
This is a grant-funded, limited-term opportunity with a position end date of June 30, 2025.
The position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S. based candidates.
