Description:
The Data Scientist will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by leveraging data to inform strategic decisions and initiatives in a public health organization.
This position is aligned with the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded program aimed at helping public health agencies improve their information systems.
The Data Scientist will work within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Public Health Administration (PHA).
Responsibilities include utilizing advanced analytics, statistical techniques, and innovative data science approaches, such as machine learning algorithms, to derive insights from Admission, Discharge, Transfer (ADT) messages for public health use.
The role involves supporting the design and implementation of a decoupled ADT data environment and pilot projects to enhance interoperability between public health technology environments.
The Data Scientist will engage with various stakeholders, including MDHHS, local public health, the state health information exchange entity (MiHIN), and other public health partners.
The position is grant-funded and limited-term, ending on June 30, 2025, with a salary range of $92,700-$134,275 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
The Data Scientist will be hired by the CDC Foundation and is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S.-based candidates.
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, or a related field is required; a Master’s or PhD is preferred.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is required.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential.
Experience in assessing data quality across large datasets is necessary.
Candidates must have experience interpreting complex datasets and deriving meaningful insights.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
The ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners and communicate public health concepts to technical audiences effectively is necessary.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities is important.
Experience in developing and implementing educational or training materials is preferred.
Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills are required, along with the ability to develop productive relationships with colleagues and partners.
Demonstrated ability to work well independently and within teams is essential.
Experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams is preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R is strongly preferred.
Experience with data manipulation and analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Pandas, NumPy) is strongly preferred.
Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, Scikit-learn) is strongly preferred.
