Remote Lead AI/ML Engineer, Algorithms & Research

Description:

• The Lead AI/ML Engineer will be part of the Algorithms and Research Team within the ML & AI organization at Upwork.
• Responsible for building foundational models supporting vertical teams like Search & Recommendations and developing Uma, the AI assistant.
• Design, train, and evaluate information retrieval systems for structured and unstructured databases.
• Create innovative models leveraging historical context and diverse data to drive business impact.
• Collaborate with machine learning engineers to transition models from research to production.
• Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and enforce engineering best practices.

Requirements:

• Proven experience in designing and developing information retrieval or RAG systems.
• Expertise in vector and/or graph databases.
• Familiarity with Transformers, CNNs, or GNNs architectures and related concepts.
• Knowledge of search and recommendations in two-sided marketplaces.
• Passion for developing autonomous agentic systems using LLMs.
• Strong publication record in top-tier conferences like NeurIPS, CVPR, ICML, ICLR, etc.

• Annual base salary in California and Washington ranges from $186,000 - $279,000 USD.
