Description:

  • Gitpod is hiring a Member of Technical Staff (Backend/Infra) to build systems and experiences that enhance software development for developers and businesses.
  • The role involves working across the entire stack, including Go, React, and cloud infrastructure, to solve significant problems for platform teams and engineers.
  • Candidates will take end-to-end ownership of critical systems while ensuring pragmatic and maintainable solutions.
  • Responsibilities include driving technical initiatives, shaping user experiences, owning core Gitpod systems, elevating engineering best practices, and solving high-impact technical challenges.
  • Within the first 30 days, new hires are expected to ship code, understand Gitpod's core value proposition, make meaningful improvements, establish strong working relationships, analyze core system components, and engage in design discussions.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must align with Gitpod's operating principles and demonstrate pragmatic engineering excellence.
  • A strong technical judgment is required to balance investment levels for different situations, ensuring high-quality solutions while being pragmatic about trade-offs.
  • Applicants should have a track record of building high-impact systems that deliver meaningful value for users and the business.
  • Proven ability to lead through execution, taking ownership of complex problems and driving them to completion is essential.
  • Experience in shipping and owning production systems at scale, working effectively across the stack, and making pragmatic technical decisions is preferred.
  • Familiarity with backend systems, particularly strong Go experience, distributed systems, API design, and data systems (PostgreSQL, Redis) is required.
  • For infrastructure, deep Linux and cloud platform expertise, experience building developer tools/platforms, and a strong systems and networking foundation are necessary.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Notion, Slack, GitHub, and CI/CD practices is expected.
