Description:

  • The Newsroom Developer position at Spotlight PA involves working with the editorial team to develop new products and tools to connect audiences with voting resources, particularly as Pennsylvania approaches the November election.
  • The role includes overseeing the expansion of Spotlight PA’s Election Center to provide more resources, tools, data, and information for engaging with state government, understanding candidates, and holding officials accountable.
  • The Newsroom Developer will collaborate with the editorial team to identify areas where Spotlight PA can serve as a direct resource to the public and develop innovative tools and storytelling techniques.
  • Responsibilities also include supporting the integration of AI Election Assistant and a mobile application, as well as assisting with other newsroom projects like creating products for change in Pennsylvania, updating website interface and user experience, and data wrangling.
  • The position requires experience in front-end web development, proficiency in HTML/CSS and Javascript, knowledge of visualization libraries like D3.js, and familiarity with Adobe tools or web-based alternatives for design editing.
  • Candidates should have a mobile-first thinking approach, experience in developing interactive graphics, creating news apps with various tools, collaborating on code with Git, knowledge of mapping tools, and proficiency in data analysis with tools like Python, SQL, and Excel.
  • The Newsroom Developer will report to the Technology Director, work closely with editorial teams, and must be goal-oriented, able to work independently, a self-starter, and possess strong organizational and communication skills.

Requirements:

  • Experience and usage in front-end web development.
  • Knowledge of Adobe tools or web-based alternatives for design editing.
  • Proficiency in HTML/CSS and Javascript, and familiarity with visualization libraries like D3.js.
  • Interest in data-driven watchdog journalism and journalism background is a plus.
  • Mobile-first thinking approach that is responsive and accessible.
  • Proficiency in developing interactive graphics from scratch.
  • Experience with creating news apps with various tools.
  • Collaboration on code with Git and GitHub or GitLab.
  • Knowledge of mapping tools like QGIS, Mapbox, Leaflet.js, etc.
  • Ability to conduct deep data analysis with tools like Python, SQL, Excel.
