Description:
Square is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Product Server organization, which is a 300+ engineering team managing 150+ backend services in various technical stacks.
The role involves establishing long-term technical strategy, operational principles, and engineering excellence culture impacting hundreds of engineers.
Responsibilities include crafting technical strategy, setting standards, providing technical leadership, coaching engineers, ensuring high-quality work, and facilitating alignment across teams.
The position may require hands-on execution to solve critical incidents and projects.
Collaboration with peers to influence engineering across Square and Block is essential.
Requirements:
15+ years of software engineering experience in building high-performance distributed systems at scale.
5+ years of experience in a technical leadership role setting technical direction and leading project teams.
3+ years of experience in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional projects.
Proven track record of delivering large infrastructures or migrations with strong collaboration, communication, and ownership.
Strong technical expertise in backend technologies like Java, Kotlin, Ruby, PHP, Terraform, GraphQL, MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB, Snowflake, Protocol Buffers, Kafka, Temporal IO, Envoy, AWS, and other cloud platforms.
Exceptional communication, leadership, and influence skills.
