Description:
Big Viking Games is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to join their Technology team in a 100% remote role, available only to current residents of Ontario who are eligible to work in Canada.
The position involves working on flagship live-ops titles, YoWorld and FishWorld, and requires expertise in building scalable systems in the cloud.
Responsibilities include designing, developing, and deploying scalable, highly concurrent cloud-based backend systems, maintaining existing game services, and progressively refactoring components for modernization.
The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to support feature development, LiveOps, and tooling needs, ensuring backend systems meet performance, reliability, and security standards.
The candidate will participate in technical design discussions, conduct code reviews, provide technical mentorship, resolve backend performance issues, and document systems and workflows.
The position also involves working in a distributed system environment to build fault-tolerant, resilient services and implementing data storage strategies using relational and non-relational databases.
Requirements:
Candidates must have 5+ years of experience building and maintaining highly concurrent backend systems.
Proficiency in PHP, Java, Node.js, or C# in production environments is required.
A minimum of 5 years of working experience with MySQL or MariaDB is necessary.
Experience with message queues, such as RabbitMQ, in production environments is essential.
Candidates should have 3+ years of experience working in a distributed systems environment.
A strong understanding of backend fundamentals, including threading, memory management, and load balancing, is required.
Experience in cloud-native development principles and tooling is necessary.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with remote teams are essential.
Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $120,000 - $140,000 CAD annually.
