Description:
As a Senior Data Engineer on the Transformation team, you will be instrumental in the development of Underdog’s reporting layer by designing models in DBT.
You will work cross-functionally with Data Scientists, Product Managers, and other stakeholders across the business to understand data needs and design performant, flexible, and low-technical-debt solutions.
Your responsibilities include designing and executing scalable reporting models using BigQuery and DBT, minimizing technical debt, making efficient use of BQ resources, keeping data fresh, and adhering to Underdog best practices.
You will create and maintain tests and documentation about the reporting layer inside the DBT models to enable Data Scientists to quickly find what they need.
Performing validation and data integrity checks on new datasets and load procedures before delivery to stakeholders is essential, as well as investigating and resolving data discrepancies.
You will stay abreast of all of Underdog's Fantasy data models, processes, business rules, contest rules, and product functionality, including compliance and regulatory considerations, and plan/execute needed changes in the reporting layer.
Assisting Data Scientists in developing analytics datasets to meet business needs is part of your role.
You will meet with stakeholders to discuss existing and upcoming data projects and deliverables, including Product Managers, Engineers, and other team members involved in data projects.
Continuous communication about progress, blockers, and anything else related to assigned tasks is expected.
Documenting and reporting issues with source data and following up with owners on resolution/path forward is required.
You will use Jira proactively to manage tasks and deliverables and participate in regular sprint planning and retrospective meetings.
Periodically presenting your work at team lunch-and-learn meetings is part of the role.
You will proactively look for ways to continuously improve the architecture in the reporting layer and team processes.
Requirements:
You should have a curious and inquisitive nature, wanting to know how things work and asking good questions.
A proactive problem-solver mindset is essential, as you will need to notice and act on existing problems and anticipate future issues.
Strong attention to detail is required, with the ability to investigate, understand, and resolve data issues.
You must be actively accountable, owning and learning from your mistakes and caring about getting things right.
Comfort in a fast-paced environment is necessary, along with being productive and engaged with minimal oversight.
You should think like an architect, building solutions that are supportable, minimize technical debt, and are flexible enough to adapt when necessary.
Collaboration and communication skills are important, especially in explaining technical concepts to non-technical users.
A minimum of 5 years of experience writing SQL and working with databases in a Data Architecture, Analytics Engineering, or Data Engineering capacity is required.
At least 3 years of experience using BigQuery is necessary.
You should have at least 2 years of experience using DBT for data transformations and architecture development.
Experience or strong familiarity with BI tools such as Sigma or Looker is preferred.
Familiarity with ETL/ELT concepts and best practices is required.
Advanced proficiency with SQL and intermediate or better proficiency with Python are necessary.
Benefits:
You will receive unlimited PTO, with flexibility except for the first few weeks before and during the NFL season.
The position offers 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
A $500 home office allowance is provided to support your work environment.
You will be part of a connected virtual-first culture with a highly engaged distributed workforce.
The company offers a 5% 401k match, FSA, and company-paid health, dental, and vision plan options for employees and their dependents.
