The Senior Data Scientist will be part of a team focused on broadening financial inclusion by extracting insights from non-traditional data.
This role involves developing and enhancing Oportun’s core intellectual property for scoring risk for underbanked consumers without traditional credit scores.
Responsibilities include developing data products and machine learning models for Risk, Fraud, Collections, and portfolio management, ensuring a frictionless customer experience.
The position requires building monitoring tools for model performance, a model deployment platform, and end-to-end reusable data pipelines.
The Senior Data Scientist will lead initiatives from project planning to stakeholder management and facilitate Model Governance Activities with Compliance and Bank Partners.

Requirements:

Candidates must be relentless problem solvers with a proven track record of delivering business results promptly.
A Master’s degree or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or a related quantitative discipline is required; a Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant experience may be considered.
At least 3 years of hands-on experience in data extraction, cleaning, analysis, and building reusable data pipelines is necessary, with proficiency in SQL, Spark SQL, and/or Hive.
Candidates should have 3+ years of experience using modern machine learning techniques and programming languages, particularly Python.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, along with strong stakeholder and project management skills.
Applicants should be comfortable in a high-growth, fast-paced, agile environment.
Experience with AWS EMR, Sage-maker, HDFS, Hive, Shell scripting, and other big data tools is a plus.
