Description:
The Senior Data Scientist in Model Risk Management will work on traditional statistical modeling methods and advanced machine learning models for various applications including loss forecasting, underwriting, marketing, collection management, and fraud detection.
This role has high visibility and involves collaboration with teams such as Data Science, Engineering, and Product Management to develop the next generation of decision-making infrastructure.
Responsibilities include conducting independent reviews and testing of statistical and AI/ML models, performing model validation, and producing detailed validation reports that outline risks and limitations.
The candidate will communicate validation findings and mitigation strategies to business audiences through presentations.
The role requires close collaboration with business owners and developers to understand the context of model use and facilitate the model approval process.
Staying updated with regulatory expectations regarding model development and validation is essential.
The candidate will support Oportun’s model risk management framework, including annual validation plans, model inventory, risk ranking, and governance.
Developing and maintaining partnerships with key stakeholders and coordinating model risk governance practices are also key responsibilities.
Attention to detail in analytics and documentation is crucial.
Requirements:
A Master’s degree or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or a related quantitative discipline is required.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in validating and/or developing traditional statistical modeling methods for loss forecasting is necessary.
Candidates must have at least 3 years of experience and knowledge of the Fair Value (FV) Loan Loss Estimate (LLE) process and modeling.
At least 1 year of experience using machine learning methodologies such as GBM, XGBoost, and NLP is required.
A minimum of 3 years of practical quantitative programming experience with Python, SQL, Spark, and/or Scala is essential.
Candidates should have at least 3 years of experience in financial risk model development or validation.
Excellent writing and communication skills are mandatory.
The candidate should be a good team player, willing to assist and share knowledge.
