The Senior Data Scientist position is focused on broadening financial inclusion by analyzing non-traditional data.
The role involves developing and enhancing Oportun’s core intellectual property for scoring risk for underbanked consumers without traditional credit scores.
Responsibilities include working with large and diverse alternative data sets, utilizing machine learning and statistical modeling to build scores and strategies for risk management, collection/loss mitigation, and fraud prevention.
The position also involves optimizing marketing spend by predicting consumer interest in Oportun’s credit-building loan products.

Requirements:

Candidates must be problem solvers with a proven track record of delivering business results promptly.
A Master’s degree or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or a related quantitative discipline is required; a Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant experience may be considered.
At least 3 years of hands-on experience in data extraction, cleaning, analysis, and building reusable data pipelines is necessary, with proficiency in SQL, Spark SQL, and/or Hive.
Candidates should have 3+ years of experience using modern machine learning techniques and programming languages such as Python.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
Strong stakeholder management and project management skills are required.
Candidates should be comfortable in a high-growth, fast-paced, agile environment.
Experience with AWS EMR, Sage-maker, or other cloud-based platforms is a plus.
Familiarity with HDFS, Hive, Shell scripting, and other big data tools is also a plus.
