Description:

  • As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work on a team to develop API endpoints and integrations for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • This position requires a candidate with strong AWS and database skills and 3-5 years of experience with Python.
  • This position is contract-to-hire.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen who lives in the continental United States, and you must be able to qualify for a "public trust" security clearance.
  • In your first 3 months, you will write code, develop tests, and debug in an agile environment, attend daily scrums, own research and troubleshooting for on-deck tickets from submission through close, own documentation and playbook of changes/solutions implemented, independently perform knowledge spikes, contribute to dynamic engineering work driven by VA needs, give input on high-level architecture decisions, and communicate those decisions to other developers on the team, and attend and participate in video meetings with internal, partner, and client teams.
  • In your first 6 months, you will proactively build relationships with cross-department teams, partners, vendors, and clients, make meaningful architectural choices based on careful evaluation and prior knowledge of solutions that work, and identify, test, and overcome challenges related to scaling platform ability to process and send millions of messages daily.
  • In your first year, you will contribute to building a communication system for a national notification platform that enables the VA to streamline various tools for different branches and divisions of the VA and standardize messaging across platforms.
  • You will thrive in this role if you have significant professional experience working in Python and AWS, experience working with Flask, FastAPI, ECS, Resilient Lambdas, Queue Management, and SNS, have worked on a complex, high-traffic site or platform, ideally with large amounts of data in an agile environment, familiarity with CSS, Datadog, BigQuery, and Docker, are humble, collaborative, experimental, and a self-starter, have a bias for action and learning over perfection, have excellent communication skills with an ability to explain ideas clearly, give and receive feedback, and work well with team members, work well in a fast-paced development environment with testing, continuous integration, and multiple daily deploys, and take a logical approach to problem-solving that combines analytical thinking and intuition.

Requirements:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen and willing and able to obtain a federal "public trust" security clearance.
  • You must be available during core hours of 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM EST.
  • It is preferable to have a GitHub (or similar public code repo) with Python code authored by the candidate.
  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher in computer science or a related field is preferred.
