Description:
The Software Engineer will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by developing and maintaining software applications for a public health association that specifically serves local, tribal, and territorial populations.
Working within Maine CDC’s Informatics team, the Software Engineer will use their programming skills to help automate processes within Maine’s NEDSS-base system, a CDC-provided surveillance system.
The Software Engineer will have strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development principles, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that improve public health.
Ideal candidates should be comfortable solving technical problems by writing code, explaining technical design architecture to both technical and non-technical individuals, and leading organizational strategy and change.
The candidate should have strong, demonstrable experience with Python and be proficient in web development, relational databases, and operating systems.
Knowledge of engineering best practices such as source control, automated testing, continuous integration and deployment, and peer review is essential.
This position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S. based candidates.
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred, but equivalent professional experience can be substituted for a degree.
Candidates should have 5 years of relevant experience and proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, or JavaScript.
Experience with software development frameworks and libraries (e.g., Python, React, Angular, Node.js) is required.
Proficiency in web development and relational databases is necessary.
Knowledge of database management systems (e.g., SQL, MongoDB) and version control tools (e.g., Git) is required.
Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, and deploying software applications is essential.
Knowledge of engineering best practices such as source control, automated testing, continuous integration and deployment, and peer review is necessary.
Experience with agile development methodologies, software design patterns, and best practices is required.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
Candidates must have the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners effectively.
The ability to analyze complex technical requirements and translate them into scalable software solutions is required.
Experience working on cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams that deliver digital products and services in an incremental, user-focused environment is necessary.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities is essential.
Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills, along with the ability to develop productive working relationships with colleagues and partners, are required.
Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work well independently and within teams.
Experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams is necessary.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
Preference will be given to candidates with Python and JavaScript experience and those with experience working with public health or healthcare data or National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS)-Base Systems.
Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $103,500-$143,500 per year, plus benefits, with individual salary offers based on experience and qualifications unique to each candidate.
The work schedule is from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST, Monday to Friday.
This is a grant-funded, limited-term opportunity with a position end date of June 30, 2025.
