Description:
Open Up Resources is a publisher of high-quality open educational resources focused on equity-centered educational experiences.
The Software Engineer III position reports to the Managing Director of Product Engineering in the Operations team.
On the first day, the new hire will pair with a teammate to set up their development environment, walk through their first code change, and deploy it to production servers.
In the first 30 days, the new hire will get to know their teammates, gain familiarity with codebases, pair regularly with teammates, take on solo tasks, and open their first pull request for production deployment.
By the end of the first 90 days, the new hire will regularly complete solo tasks, participate in technical discussions, and build a deep understanding of at least one curriculum.
The team primarily works on two Ruby on Rails applications: a custom content management system (CMS) and an authentication gateway for the web curriculum.
Responsibilities include modeling a full-course curriculum, writing custom ETL scripts, creating views and queries for content presentation, and ensuring high-quality UX for integrations.
Requirements:
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a software engineer is required.
At least 3 years of experience working with Ruby on Rails in a production environment is necessary.
Extensive experience with web frameworks and a solid understanding of abstract modeling of complex data is essential.
A clear understanding of relational databases and SQL is required.
The candidate must thrive in a remote team environment, be self-motivated, and generous with knowledge-sharing.
Strong communication skills are necessary, with the ability to discuss code clearly and empathetically with teammates of varying technical expertise.
Responsibilities include designing user-centered software solutions, writing production code and tests, vetting business requirements with product owners, identifying opportunities for system improvement, and mentoring teammates.
