Description:

  • This position at Canonical is for a Staff Engineer or above in any team, with the opportunity to work on various projects within the company.
  • Canonical is a global leader in delivering open-source solutions, with a focus on Ubuntu for cloud, desktop, and IoT.
  • The engineering teams at Canonical work on a wide range of technologies including operating systems, programming languages, applications, devices, infrastructure, and services.
  • Staff Engineers are expected to excel in software architecture, coding, leadership, and collaboration across teams and products.
  • The role involves partnering with an Engineering Director to take responsibility for product outcomes, contributing high-quality code, providing technical leadership, motivating teams, and ensuring exceptional design and documentation.
  • Staff Engineers drive the architecture, design, and evolution of impactful open-source projects, working with technologies like Golang, Python, C/C++, Rust, React, and Flutter.
  • The position offers the opportunity to engage with the open-source community, contribute to various technologies, and ensure seamless software operations at scale.
  • Remote opportunities are available for Staff Engineers in all time zones, with occasional global travel for company events.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
  • Demonstrated drive, exceeding expectations, technical leadership, team motivation, and ability to deliver on schedule.
  • Proficiency in at least one of Go, Rust, Python, or C, with subject matter expertise in the engineering domain.
  • Strong organizational skills, self-starting attitude, and professionalism in interactions.
  • Experience with Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu, and a focus on performance and detail orientation.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Passion for open-source software, innovation, cutting-edge technology, and a result-oriented mindset.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for company events up to two weeks each.
