Description:
CIR is seeking an individual with research and data engineering skills to join the team for a project focusing on investigating Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violence on YouTube and TikTok in multiple languages.
The project aims to strengthen the evidence base on Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violence in Ethiopia, inform government institutions, civil society organizations, social media companies, and the general public about this issue, and empower CSOs and government institutions in Ethiopia with practical recommendations.
The individual will be responsible for automating processes to scrape, clean, and sort data from YouTube and TikTok, analyzing this data, planning and carrying out research using user-generated content, identifying different languages within the dataset, and working effectively as part of a remote team.
The position requires approximately 70 days of work between August 2024 and December 2024.
Requirements:
Ability to automate processes for data scraping, cleaning, and sorting from YouTube and TikTok, as well as analyzing the data.
Experience and confidence in conducting research using user-generated content.
Familiarity with tools for data extraction and analysis is beneficial.
Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a remote team.
Desired experience in researching online hate speech or similar phenomena.
Ability to identify different languages within the dataset for sharing language-specific datasets with data annotators (English, Amharic, Afaan Oromo, and Tigrigna).
