Description:
We are looking for a Unity Developer based in South Africa to help build the prototype for Hopetown, a narrative RPG about memory, identity, and the ghosts of the past.
This role is a contract position for the prototype phase, with the option to be either full-time or part-time based on your availability.
There is potential for continued work into full development depending on fit and funding.
You will be one of the first technical hires on a small, collaborative indie team, working directly with writers, artists, and leadership.
Your responsibilities will include developing and implementing core features in Unity (C#), such as dialogue, exploration, UI, and scene logic.
You will collaborate closely with the narrative and art teams to create a playable vertical slice that captures the tone and feel of the game.
Rapid iteration on mechanics is expected, taking a scrappy and creative approach to development.
You will build lightweight tools to support writers and artists in testing and integrating content.
Ensuring the prototype's performance for stability and usability is crucial, preparing it for internal review or external pitch.
You will contribute creatively by sharing ideas and feedback on how systems, story, and world interact.
Requirements:
A minimum of 3 years of experience using Unity with C#, ideally with a shipped game or polished prototype.
A strong interest in dialogue-heavy, story-driven games and/or experimental storytelling.
Comfort with working quickly, iterating, and discarding ideas when necessary.
A self-starter attitude that thrives in small, scrappy teams and the ability to work independently when needed.
Strong communication skills, particularly in collaborating with non-technical teammates.
Proficiency in version control workflows, specifically with Git and/or Plastic.
Benefits:
You will have creative freedom in an environment that encourages your unique voice and vision to shape a groundbreaking RPG.
The project is thought-provoking, challenging conventions and offering a deep philosophical experience for players.
The studio operates on a remote-first basis, providing you the flexibility to work from wherever inspiration strikes.
