Description:

• Marqeta is seeking talented Senior Backend Software Engineers to join their Engineering team in Toronto, Canada.
• The role involves developing scalable software that powers Marqeta's backend services.
• Responsibilities include creating and reviewing engineering design documentation, continuously improving systems, infrastructure, and processes, creating features, reviewing code, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
• The position allows for remote work within Vancouver or Ontario, Canada.
• The role includes defining and delivering well-scoped milestones for projects and may involve being a technical lead.
• Engineers will actively consider customer needs and leverage input from product stakeholders to deliver customer value quickly.
• The position requires mentoring less-experienced team members and writing clear, efficient code with minimal bugs.
• Engineers will identify gaps in the system and propose plans to address them, challenge the status quo, and innovate on architecture.
• The role includes significant ownership of components/features and participation in on-call coverage.

Requirements:

• Candidates must have 5+ years of experience as a backend engineer with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree; alternatively, 8+ years of relevant experience may suffice.
• Experience in building scalable software platforms is required.
• Proficiency in Java is essential.
• Candidates should have experience working within Cloud environments, preferably AWS.
• Experience with SQL and Microservices architecture is necessary.
• Familiarity with distributed systems and troubleshooting production issues is required.
• Candidates must demonstrate the ability to decompose business problems into solutions involving multiple interacting components.
• A focus on quality and meeting deadlines is essential.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are required to present clear messages to various audiences.
• Ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders to identify technical blind spots and clarify ambiguity is necessary.
