Description:

  • The position is for a System Software Engineer specializing in Ubuntu Networking, available for remote work from the Americas or EMEA.
  • The role involves enhancing Ubuntu's network stack across various platforms, including cloud, server, desktop, and IoT environments.
  • Responsibilities include designing, developing, and maintaining core network components to ensure fast, reliable, and secure connectivity for Ubuntu.
  • The engineer will collaborate with internal and external teams to optimize network performance and integrate solutions across different systems.
  • The role also includes contributing to open-source projects and influencing the direction of networking technologies used in Ubuntu.
  • The engineer will be expected to write high-quality code, debug issues, and provide solutions to optimize the network stack.
  • Producing clear and comprehensive technical documentation to support internal teams and the broader open-source community is also a key responsibility.
  • Participation in code and design reviews, along with mentoring less senior engineers, is expected.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a relevant field, or a compelling alternative path.
  • A strong knowledge of networking architecture, protocols, and design is required.
  • Extensive experience with Linux networking, from kernel to user space, is essential.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as systemd-networkd, NetworkManager, iwd, conman, and others is necessary.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Golang, C/C++, Rust, or Python, is required.
  • Experience working with virtual networks, distributed systems, and hardware offloading technologies is important.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with a globally distributed team are essential.
  • Professional experience with Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu, is required.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are necessary.
