Description:

  • Instrumentl is a mission-driven startup focused on helping the nonprofit sector with grant discovery and management.
  • The company is a hyper growth YC-backed startup with over 4,000 nonprofit clients, including organizations like the San Diego Zoo and the University of Alaska.
  • The role of Software Engineer, AI/ML GenAI involves owning the full lifecycle of AI features, from rapid prototyping to production deployment and ongoing evaluation.
  • Responsibilities include designing agentic systems, managing RAG end-to-end, managing embeddings at scale, fine-tuning and building evaluation, and collaborating cross-functionally.
  • The team is fully distributed, but candidates are expected to have significant overlap with Pacific Time Zone working hours.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must have 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years working with modern LLMs.
  • Proven experience in taking LLM/RAG systems from prototype to production, owning reliability and observability.
  • Experience in building tool/function-calling workflows and safe tool integrations.
  • Strong understanding of document ingestion, chunking, embeddings, and hybrid search.
  • Hands-on experience with embedding model selection/versioning and vector databases.
  • Comfort in designing evaluation suites and familiarity with evaluation frameworks.
  • Proficiency in Python and TypeScript/Node, with familiarity in Ruby on Rails being a plus.
  • Comfortable with SQL, schema design, and building data pipelines.
  • A collaborative approach and ability to translate research ideas into user-friendly features.
  • A results-driven mindset with a focus on speed, quality, and simplicity.
